Classification
A deck or patio is classed as a Class 10a (non-habitable) structure under the Building Code. The current code states that if your deck or patio design meets one or more of these four requirements, you will need to have the plans assessed by a building certifier:
- Decks that are more than one metre above ground level
- Greater than 10 square metres in total size
- Greater than 2.4m high with an average mean height of less than 2.1m
- Exceeds 5 metres in length on any side
Step Into Your Next Project
1. Think about these aspects for your design
- What is the purpose of your project?
- What are the main features?
- How many people do you plan to entertain?
- What is the style and colours of your existing dwelling?
- Do you require additional items such as bench seats, storage, BBQ/outdoor kitchen, privacy screens or feature walls?
- How important is low maintenance to you?
- Do you need to incorporate lighting or plumbing?
- Is there a time frame for the project?
- Do you have a preferred budget for the job?
2. Do your research and gather photos
This helps you develop clarity around the outcome for your project. Do this step well and see how much easier it is to explain your thoughts in the next step.
- Use the internet or magazines to help gather ideas
- Put together a collection of photos with aspects that appeal to you
Good places to start: Houzz, Google Images, Pinterest.
